Syria/Lebanon: When bombs are destroying homes and people are dying, the only course of action survivors are left with is to escape. They are forced to leave behind nearly everything: familiar surroundings, schools, jobs, friends and relatives. Every sense of security is lost and everyday life becomes an ordeal. A growing part of the population of Syria has become engulfed in civil war. More than three million people have fled the fighting and roughly half of them are children. They carry painful memories on their journey towards an uncertain future – memories of war, destruction and loved ones who died in the rubble. Most of the refugees seek shelter in the neighbouring country of Lebanon. But they are plagued by uncertainty: How will we survive? Who will help us?
Our project supports refugees in the Lebanese mountainous region of Chouf. Working together with our local partner Amurt, we have made it possible for 920 children to attend state schools. We pay for transport, school fees and uniforms. We also help to maintain and equip the schools.
Some girls and boys cannot attend school, because there is no space or because they are too traumatised. To accommodate these children, we have established a special shelter, where they receive regular school instruction and special psychosocial counselling. Therapists are helping 485 children to overcome the trauma of war.
