School centres for street children
Pakistan: Extreme poverty, broken families and physical or sexual abuse are all factors that force many children and young people on to the streets. There is no social security system in place. Particularly in Pakistan’s large cities, the number of children living or working in the streets is increasing dramatically. According to government sources, more than 1.5 million girls and boys live on the country’s streets, a figure that civil society organisations believe to be as high as 2.5 million. Life on the streets
On the streets, children are more at risk than at home: they are persecuted by the police, exploited by their “employers” and disdained by society. In order to survive, these girls and boys are forced to collect rubbish, beg, prostitute themselves, deal drugs or steal. Street children are particularly at risk of being sexually abused and exploited. And the longer the children live on the streets, the more difficult it is to reintegrate them into society. An active role for children
Children are trained as change agents, i.e. they take on a “pilot function” for other street children and interact closely with project social workers. They contact employees at bus stations, where many street children can be found, and ask them to help and protect the younger children. The change agents are educated on children’s rights, child protection and the participation of children.
Increasing public awareness
It is essential to raise public awareness on the problems of street children in order to bring about a lasting change in attitudes. This can be done through information campaigns and by providing training for representatives of police and social authorities, through nationwide media campaigns and lobby work. A strategy is developed for networking the project with public authorities and other non-profit organisations in order to ensure its long-term existence. Heightening public awareness of the problem of street children is another factor that will help to increase the longevity of the project.
